Fun Facts

  • Tuzoia had a bivalved carapace that could reach 180 millimetres (about 7 inches) in length, making it one of the largest known arthropods of the entire Cambrian period.
  • Fossils of Tuzoia have been found on six continents worth of Cambrian rock, turning up in North America, Australia, China, the Czech Republic, and Siberia, showing it was a genuinely global ocean dweller.
  • The carapace of Tuzoia was strongly domed and often covered in tiny spine-like ornaments along the margin, giving it a spiky, alien appearance unlike almost any living animal today.
  • Tuzoia lived from around 512 million years ago all the way to about 457 million years ago, meaning this single genus survived for roughly 55 million years across the Cambrian and into the Ordovician.
  • Despite being one of the most commonly found large Cambrian fossils, paleontologists have never found the soft body parts of Tuzoia preserved well enough to be certain whether it was a predator, a filter feeder, or something in between.
