Fun Facts
- âBefore Yutyrannus was described in 2012, Beipiaosaurus was one of the heaviest dinosaurs ever confirmed to have feathers directly preserved in the fossil record, weighing around 85 kilograms (187 pounds).
- âBeipiaosaurus carried two completely different feather types at the same time: smaller pennaceous feathers similar to modern bird feathers, and bizarre long unbranched ribbon-like structures called EBFFs up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) long found on the neck, trunk, and tail.
- âThe species name inexpectus is Latin for unexpected, chosen in 1999 by the scientists who described it because the fossils were packed with features no one had predicted finding in a single dinosaur.
- âDespite being a close relative of Velociraptor and modern birds as a maniraptoran theropod, Beipiaosaurus gave up meat entirely and evolved into a plant-eater, one of the clearest examples of how dramatically theropod dinosaurs could change direction over millions of years.
- âThe brownish feather color of Beipiaosaurus is not a guess: researchers analyzed microscopic structures called melanosomes preserved inside the fossil feather impressions to reconstruct the likely coloration with genuine scientific confidence.
