Fun Facts
- âThe claws of Therizinosaurus were so enormous, the first Soviet scientists who found them in 1948 thought they had discovered the shell fragments of a giant prehistoric turtle, which is why the species name is cheloniformis, meaning turtle-shaped.
- âDespite being a theropod in the same broad group as T. rex and Velociraptor, Therizinosaurus was almost certainly a herbivore, using its metre-long claws to hook and drag leafy branches into its mouth rather than to slash prey.
- âTherizinosaurus is known only from a handful of bones including its spectacular claws, some arm and leg bones, and a few ribs. No skull has ever been found, which means scientists have pieced together much of its appearance by studying its smaller relatives such as Beipiaosaurus and Erlikosaurus.
- âTherizinosaurus lived alongside some of the heaviest dinosaurs ever discovered in the Nemegt Formation, sharing its habitat with the giant long-necked sauropod Opisthocoelicaudia and the massive duck-billed hadrosaur Saurolophus, as well as the fearsome predator Tarbosaurus.
- âScientists estimate that Therizinosaurus could reach vegetation up to 5 meters (about 16 feet) off the ground when it stretched its neck and raised its arms, making it one of the tallest browsers of the Cretaceous world and able to access food that most other plant-eaters simply could not reach.
