Fun Facts
- âAustriadactylus had multi-cusped teeth, meaning each tooth had several pointed tips, a feature so unusual that it sets this pterosaur apart from almost every other flying reptile ever discovered.
- âThe fossils were found in Late Triassic rocks dated to approximately 205.7 million years ago, making Austriadactylus one of the three or four oldest pterosaurs known to science.
- âAustriadactylus was formally named and described in 2002 by Italian paleontologist Fabio Marco Dalla Vecchia, based on material recovered from the Carnic Alps region of Austria.
- âDespite being a very early pterosaur, Austriadactylus already had the defining feature of all pterosaurs: a hugely elongated fourth finger that acted as the main strut for its entire wing.
- âAustriadactylus lived at a time when dinosaurs had only just appeared on Earth, meaning this little flyer was sharing the Triassic skies at the very moment the age of dinosaurs was just getting started.
