Fun Facts

  • Zhenyuanopterus was formally named in 2006 by Chinese paleontologist Lu Junchang, who named it in honor of Sun Zhenyuan, the fossil collector who discovered the specimen in Liaoning Province.
  • The species name longirostris literally means long-snouted in Latin, and it earns that name: the jaws of Zhenyuanopterus are so elongated they make up a huge proportion of its total skull length, rivaling even the most extreme fish-catching pterosaurs.
  • Zhenyuanopterus belongs to the family Boreopteridae, a group of pterosaurs that lived exclusively in what is now China and were specialized for snatching fish from lakes and rivers with their spike-toothed jaws.
  • The Yixian Formation where Zhenyuanopterus was found is one of the most fossil-rich rock layers on Earth, also preserving feathered dinosaurs like Microraptor and early birds like Confuciusornis from the same time period.
  • Zhenyuanopterus lived roughly 119 to 120 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous, meaning it shared its skies and wetlands with some of the most famous feathered dinosaurs ever discovered, all in what is now northeastern China.
