Fun Facts
- âThalassomedon swallowed rocks called gastroliths, and scientists found over 250 polished stones in one specimen's stomach, likely used as ballast to help it dive or to grind up prey.
- âIts neck alone contained 62 vertebrae, more than any land animal alive today, and could reach roughly 20 feet in length, making it one of the longest necks of any animal ever recorded.
- âThalassomedon lived in the Western Interior Seaway, a shallow inland sea that split North America in half from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico roughly 94 million years ago.
- âDespite its serpentine neck, Thalassomedon could NOT raise its head high above the water like a sea monster: the neck bones show it was most flexible sweeping side to side just below the surface, like a giant underwater fishing rod.
- âThe holotype specimen of Thalassomedon, collected in 1939 from Colorado and formally described by paleontologist Samuel Welles in 1943, is still housed at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science where you can see it today.
