Fun Facts
- âTethyshadros is the most complete dinosaur skeleton ever found in Italy, with bones from nearly every part of its body preserved in the Lipica Formation limestone.
- âThe species name 'insularis' literally means 'islander' in Latin, because 72 million years ago the land that is now Trieste, Italy was a small island surrounded by the warm Tethys Sea.
- âTethyshadros was officially described in a 2009 scientific paper by Italian paleontologist Fabio Marco Dalla Vecchia, more than a decade after the bones were first excavated in the 1990s.
- âIsland dwarfism caused Tethyshadros to be dramatically smaller than its closest relatives. On the mainland, similar hadrosaurs could reach 30 feet or more, but this island species topped out around 13 feet.
- âThe ancient Tethys Sea that gave this dinosaur its name no longer exists. Over millions of years it closed up as Africa and Europe collided, eventually forming the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps.
