- âThe island Zalmoxes lived on, called Hateg Island, was surrounded by the ancient Tethys Sea: a vast body of warm water that once divided Europe and Africa long before the Mediterranean existed.
- âFranz Baron Nopcsa, who first described Zalmoxes fossils in 1899, was not just a paleontologist but also a spy for the Austro-Hungarian empire during World War I, making him one of the most adventurous scientists in history.
- âThe name Zalmoxes was not officially established until 2003, more than 100 years after the first fossils were described, because scientists kept reclassifying the creature under different genus names through the 1900s.
- âZalmoxes may have shared Hateg Island with Hatzegopteryx, a colossal pterosaur with a wingspan of up to 10 to 12 meters that is thought to have been an apex predator hunting island animals, including dinosaurs like Zalmoxes.
