Fun Facts
- ✓Scutosaurus lived between 259 and 252 million years ago, meaning it survived right up to the edge of the Great Dying, the worst mass extinction in Earth's history, which wiped out over 90 percent of all marine species.
- ✓Despite looking like a reptile cousin of a rhinoceros, Scutosaurus was actually a pareiasaur, a group more closely related to the ancestors of turtles than to any living lizard.
- ✓Its body mass is estimated to have exceeded 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb), making it one of the largest land animals alive anywhere on Earth during the entire Permian period.
- ✓Scutosaurus had bony lumps called osteoderms scattered across its thick skin, similar in function to the armor on a modern crocodile, providing protection against the large predatory gorgonopsians that hunted it.
- ✓All known Scutosaurus fossils come from European Russia, near the Ural Mountains, in rocks belonging to the Malokinelskaya and Salarevo Formations, making this animal a uniquely Russian giant of deep time.
