Fun Facts

  • Inostrancevia lived about 255 million years ago, making it roughly 20 million years older than the very first dinosaurs, which did not appear until around 235 million years ago.
  • Its canine teeth could reach up to 15 centimeters (nearly 6 inches) in length, comparable to those of Smilodon, the famous saber-toothed cat that lived hundreds of millions of years later.
  • A 2023 study published in Current Biology found that Inostrancevia migrated from Russia all the way to what is now South Africa, a distance of over 10,000 kilometers, possibly because the mass extinction event was already collapsing prey populations in the north.
  • Inostrancevia belongs to a group called gorgonopsians, named after the Gorgons of Greek mythology, the snake-haired monsters whose gaze turned people to stone, because their skulls looked so ferocious to early scientists.
  • Despite looking very reptilian, Inostrancevia was actually more closely related to you than to any lizard or crocodile alive today, sitting deep on the evolutionary branch that eventually led to all mammals.
