Fun Facts
- âOnly a single skull has ever been found for Nemegtosaurus, yet that one fossil was enough for scientists to confirm it as a brand-new genus of titanosaur sauropod.
- âFor decades, paleontologists debated whether Nemegtosaurus and the headless sauropod Opisthocoelicaudia, found in the same Nemegt Formation, were actually the same animal, one known only from a skull and the other only from a body.
- âNemegtosaurus lived alongside Tarbosaurus, Asia's version of T. rex, in what is now the Gobi Desert, meaning these gentle giants had to watch out for one of the most powerful predators in Cretaceous Asia.
- âIts pencil-shaped teeth look just like those of Diplodocus, a completely unrelated sauropod from North America, which fooled scientists for years into thinking Nemegtosaurus belonged to the diplodocoid family rather than titanosaurs.
- âThe Nemegt Basin, where this dinosaur was found, has produced more species of giant dinosaurs per square kilometer than almost any other fossil site in Asia, earning it the nickname the 'Mongolia Dinosaur Graveyard' among paleontologists.
