Fun Facts
- âWhen William Parker Foulke excavated Hadrosaurus foulkii in 1858 in a New Jersey marl pit, it became the most complete dinosaur skeleton found in North America up to that point, giving scientists their first real look at a large dinosaur's full body plan.
- âHadrosaurus had a dental battery containing hundreds of individual teeth stacked in columns, meaning as old teeth wore down new ones constantly grew in from below, a system more like a conveyor belt than anything seen in most modern animals.
- âThe famous 1868 mounted skeleton at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia was assembled by sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins under the supervision of paleontologist Joseph Leidy, and it was the first time in history that the public could stand next to a real mounted dinosaur skeleton.
- âBecause the original Hadrosaurus fossil lacked a skull, the head displayed on the 1868 mount was actually borrowed and modeled from a different dinosaur entirely, meaning the most famous early dinosaur exhibit in history had the wrong head for over a century.
- âNew Jersey is so proud of Hadrosaurus that in 1991 the state officially declared it the New Jersey State Dinosaur, making it one of the first official state dinosaurs in the United States.
