Fun Facts
- âGuanlong lived roughly 92 million years before T. rex, yet it already belonged to the same family tree, making it one of the oldest tyrannosaur relatives ever discovered.
- âThe spectacular hollow crest on Guanlong's skull was almost certainly used for display and attracting mates, not for fighting, because it was far too thin and fragile to survive a headbutt.
- âWhen paleontologist Xu Xing and his team found the two Guanlong fossils in 2006, one individual had fallen into a muddy bog and the other had apparently tumbled in right on top of it, trapping both together.
- âGuanlong was described in the journal Nature in 2006, and scientists estimated it from the Shishugou Formation dated to approximately 154.8 million years ago, placing it firmly in the Oxfordian stage of the Late Jurassic.
- âUnlike the massively muscled T. rex, Guanlong was slender and probably relied on speed and agility to catch prey, suggesting that the early tyrannosauroids were fast hunters rather than powerful crushers.
