Fun Facts

  • Concavenator is the only known carcharodontosaurid dinosaur ever found in Europe, making its discovery in central Spain one of the biggest surprises in early 21st-century paleontology.
  • The quill knobs on its ulna bone sit in the exact same position and spacing as the feather anchor points found on the arm bones of eagles and ravens alive today.
  • Its entire back hump was created by just two vertebrae that towered far above all the others in its spine, a feature so unusual that no other carcharodontosaurid has ever been found with anything like it.
  • The Las Hoyas fossil site where Concavenator was found is so exquisitely preserved that it has also yielded insects with intact wing color patterns, fish with visible individual scales, and feathers from some of the earliest known birds in the fossil record.
  • When Concavenator was described in the journal Nature in 2010, it reignited a major scientific argument about whether giant carnivorous dinosaurs could have had feathers on their arms, a debate that paleontologists are still having today.
