Fun Facts
- âShaochilong was originally lumped into a completely different dinosaur genus called Chilantaisaurus back in 1964, and it took 45 years before scientists gave it its own name in 2009.
- âIts teeth were so similar in shape to a shark's serrated cutting teeth that the scientists who named it literally called it the shark-toothed dragon, making it one of the few dinosaurs directly named after a fish.
- âShaochilong is classified in the family Carcharodontosauridae, the same fearsome group that includes Carcharodontosaurus from Africa and Giganotosaurus from South America, two of the largest meat-eaters ever to walk the Earth.
- âScientists have debated whether Shaochilong was a carcharodontosaurid, a tyrannosauroid, or another kind of allosauroid entirely, meaning this single dinosaur has been reshuffled across the family tree multiple times by different research teams.
- âThe rock layer Shaochilong was found in, the Miaogou Formation of Inner Mongolia, dates to roughly 100.5 million years ago, placing this predator right at the boundary between the Early and Late Cretaceous periods.
