Fun Facts
- âChungkingosaurus was formally named in 1983 by the legendary Chinese paleontologist Dong Zhiming, who also named dozens of other Chinese dinosaurs and is sometimes called the 'dragon hunter' of Chinese paleontology.
- âThe city name in the fossil's name, Chungking, is an older English spelling of Chongqing, a megacity in southwest China that today has a population of over 30 million people, making this dinosaur named after one of the world's largest cities.
- âChungkingosaurus lived approximately 161.5 million years ago during the Late Jurassic, meaning it roamed China roughly 95 million years before T. rex ever existed.
- âUnlike Stegosaurus, which had wide flat plates, Chungkingosaurus had narrower, more spike-like back plates, suggesting different stegosaurs evolved their armor in very different ways, possibly for different defensive or display purposes.
- âChungkingosaurus was discovered in the Upper Shaximiao Formation, one of the richest dinosaur fossil beds in China, which has also yielded giants like Mamenchisaurus, meaning this small armored dinosaur once shared its world with some of the longest-necked animals ever to walk the Earth.
