Fun Facts
- âDacentrurus was originally named Omosaurus armatus in 1875 by legendary British scientist Richard Owen, the same man who actually coined the word dinosaur, but the name had to be changed in 1902 because Omosaurus was already taken by a completely different prehistoric reptile called a phytosaur.
- âPortugal has produced some of the most complete Dacentrurus fossils ever found, including material from the Lourinha Formation, making the Iberian Peninsula one of the best places on Earth to study this dinosaur.
- âDacentrurus survived all the way into the Early Cretaceous, around 121 million years ago, meaning it outlasted many of its fellow Jurassic dinosaurs by millions of years according to the Paleobiology Database.
- âThe genus name Dacentrurus literally means very pointed tail in Greek, a direct nod to the fearsome arrangement of paired spikes at the end of its tail that paleontologists believe were a primary defense weapon.
- âUnlike its famous cousin Stegosaurus which lived in North America, Dacentrurus appears to have had more spikes and fewer large flat plates, suggesting the two branches of the stegosaur family evolved their defenses in slightly different ways on different continents.
