Fun Facts
- ✓Bunostegos lived roughly 252 million years ago in what is now the Agadez Region of Niger, West Africa, in rocks from the Moradi Formation.
- ✓The bony knobs on the skull of Bunostegos were far larger than those of any other pareiasaur, so oversized that paleontologists described them as unlike anything seen in the group before.
- ✓A 2013 study led by paleontologist Linda Tsuji argued that Bunostegos was not just isolated geographically but had evolved in total isolation for millions of years, its limb bones suggesting a more upright posture than most of its sprawling pareiasaur relatives.
- ✓Bunostegos was named and formally described in 2003 by paleontologists Christian Sidor, Oumarou Ide, and colleagues, based on fossils collected from the harsh Saharan terrain of northern Niger.
- ✓The region where Bunostegos lived during the Late Permian was so deep inside Pangaea that climate models suggest it experienced extreme seasonal heat and drought, essentially a dead zone in the heart of the ancient supercontinent.
