Fun Facts
- âXenoceratops was formally named in 2012 by paleontologists Michael Ryan and David Evans, but the fossils had already been collected in 1958 by C.M. Sternberg and spent over 50 years in storage at the Canadian Museum of Nature before anyone realized they represented a brand-new species.
- âThe species name 'foremostensis' comes from the village of Foremost in southern Alberta, Canada, which is the closest human settlement to where the bones were found in the Foremost Formation.
- âAt 72.2 million years old, Xenoceratops is one of the oldest known large-bodied horned dinosaurs from Canada, making it an important ancestor-relative for understanding how ceratopsids spread and diversified across North America.
- âThe name Xenoceratops literally means 'alien horned face,' a nod to the highly unusual horn and frill arrangement that set it apart from all other ceratopsians known at the time of its description.
- âXenoceratops belongs to Centrosaurinae, the same sub-family as Styracosaurus and Centrosaurus, but its unique frill decorations suggest each species in this group evolved their elaborate headgear in slightly different directions, possibly for species recognition or attracting mates.
