Fun Facts
- âVulcanodon was discovered in 1969 on a small island in Lake Kariba, a massive reservoir created when the Kariba Dam was built in 1958, flooding the Zambezi Valley and accidentally creating the perfect isolated site for fossil preservation.
- âFor decades after its 1972 formal description, Vulcanodon held the title of the world's earliest known sauropod dinosaur, meaning it was literally the oldest of the giants for a long stretch of paleontological history.
- âThe species name 'karibaensis' directly honors Lake Kariba where the fossil was found, making it one of the few dinosaurs named after a human-made body of water.
- âWhen it was first described in 1972 by palaeontologist M. R. Cooper, scientists were puzzled because the teeth found near the skeleton turned out to belong to a completely different theropod dinosaur, leading to years of confusion about what Vulcanodon actually ate.
- âVulcanodon is classified in its own family, Vulcanodontidae, which means it was distinctive enough from all other sauropods that scientists gave it its very own branch on the dinosaur family tree.
