Fun Facts
- âUintatherium had one of the smallest brains relative to its body size of any mammal ever discovered, with a brain smaller than a modern horse despite being far heavier.
- âThe species name U. anceps means 'two-headed' in Latin, referring to the double-crested shape seen on certain skull bones, not because anyone thought it had two heads.
- âWhen the first Uintatherium fossils were shipped to scientists in 1872, two of the most famous and competitive paleontologists in American history, Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh, both raced to name it first in what became part of the legendary Bone Wars rivalry.
- âUintatherium lived at the same time as early ancestors of horses, and both animals roamed the forests and swamps of what is now Wyoming, though Uintatherium outweighed those early horse relatives by over 100 times.
- âA second species, Uintatherium insperatus, was discovered in China, proving that relatives of this bizarre horned mammal managed to spread all the way across the ancient landmasses of the Eocene world.
