Fun Facts
- âTemnodontosaurus platyodon was the very first ichthyosaur ever scientifically described, making it the founding species of an entire group of ocean reptiles, with anatomist Sir Everard Home publishing his analysis between 1814 and 1819.
- âIts eyes measured up to 20 cm in diameter with a sclerotic ring of bony plates inside them, an adaptation scientists believe allowed it to hunt in near-total darkness at extreme ocean depths, possibly diving as deep as 600 meters.
- âThe famous fossil hunter Mary Anning, who was only around 11 or 12 years old when the first Temnodontosaurus skull was found on the Dorset cliffs, helped shape what would become one of the most important fossil discoveries in history.
- âTemnodontosaurus was so large it almost certainly preyed on other ichthyosaurs as well as giant squid and large fish, and some specimens show bite marks from other large predators, suggesting the Jurassic seas were a brutal battleground.
- âUnlike dinosaurs on land, Temnodontosaurus could not come ashore at all and gave birth to live young directly in the ocean, just like modern dolphins, and at least one fossil has been found showing a baby preserved inside the mother's body.
