Fun Facts
- âThe first Supersaurus bones discovered in 1972 were so massive that paleontologist James Jensen initially thought he had found the shoulder blade of a Brachiosaurus, not realizing it belonged to something even bigger.
- âSupersaurus may be the longest dinosaur ever found: the largest individual is estimated at possibly over 40 meters (130 feet), edging out even Diplodocus and Patagotitan for sheer length.
- âThe type species is named vivianae in honor of Vivian Jones, the amateur fossil hunter from Delta, Colorado, who stumbled upon the bones and alerted scientists in 1972.
- âA potential second species of Supersaurus, originally called Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis, was found in Portugal, meaning this genus may have ranged from North America all the way to Europe when the two continents were much closer together.
- âSupersaurus belonged to the Diplodocidae family, which means its tail alone could have been around 45 feet long and may have been cracked like a whip at supersonic speeds to communicate or scare off predators.
