Fun Facts
- âSonidosaurus was formally described in 2006 by a team of five Chinese paleontologists led by Xu Xing, one of the most prolific dinosaur scientists alive today, who has named more dinosaurs than almost any other researcher in history.
- âThe quarry where Sonidosaurus was unearthed in 2001 in Saihangaobi, Inner Mongolia, later produced the bones of Gigantoraptor erlianensis in 2005, an oviraptorosaur estimated at 8 meters long and roughly 1,400 kilograms, making it the largest known feathered dinosaur.
- âAt around 9 meters long, Sonidosaurus was a small titanosaur by the standards of its group, which includes giants like Argentinosaurus that may have reached 30 to 40 meters, meaning Sonidosaurus was almost a dwarf in its own family.
- âSonidosaurus lived approximately 72 million years ago during the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous, a time when Asia and North America shared many similar dinosaur lineages due to intermittent land connections.
- âThe Iren Dabasu Formation where Sonidosaurus was found has also produced the hadrosaur Bactrosaurus and the theropod Erectopus, making it one of the most diverse Late Cretaceous fossil beds in all of Asia.
