Fun Facts
- âSaurosuchus was not a dinosaur at all. It was a pseudosuchian archosaur, meaning it was actually more closely related to modern crocodilians than to any dinosaur.
- âIt lived in the Ischigualasto Formation alongside some of the very earliest dinosaurs, including Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus, and it dwarfed all of them.
- âThe species name galilei honors Galileo J. Scaglia, one of the two fossil hunters who discovered the first specimen in 1957 in Argentina.
- âSaurosuchus could hold its legs more directly beneath its body than a modern crocodile, which means it could walk and run far more efficiently on land.
- âAt roughly 227 million years old, Saurosuchus lived about 160 million years before T. rex, making it one of the oldest known large apex predators on the South American continent.
