Fun Facts
- ✓Protosuchus lived approximately 199 to 193 million years ago, right at the boundary between the Triassic and Early Jurassic periods, making it one of the oldest crocodile relatives ever discovered.
- ✓At only about 80 centimetres long, Protosuchus was roughly the size of a large house cat, yet it was already built with the armored body plan that would make crocodilians one of the most successful animal lineages on the planet.
- ✓Protosuchus had longer legs than any modern crocodile and likely ran upright on land rather than belly-crawling, meaning it was much more agile and land-based than the crocs we see today.
- ✓Fossil evidence places Protosuchus in what is now the American Southwest, meaning real proto-crocs were prowling the same landscape that would eventually become the Arizona desert.
- ✓Protosuchus gives its name to an entire family of early crocs called Protosuchidae, making it the founding member of a scientific group that spans millions of years of crocodilian evolution.
