Fun Facts
- âNeuquensaurus was officially named way back in 1893, making it one of the earliest sauropods ever described from South America, long before most dinosaur science on that continent even began.
- âThe bony studs in Neuquensaurus skin, called osteoderms, were not just decoration. Scientists think they may have stored calcium and minerals that the dinosaur could draw on during egg-laying season.
- âNeuquensaurus belonged to a group called Saltasauridae, a family named after Salta Province in Argentina, meaning Argentina essentially has TWO dinosaur families named after its own geography.
- âAt roughly 26 feet long, Neuquensaurus was actually a small sauropod by titanosaur standards. Its giant cousins like Patagotitan could reach over 120 feet, making Neuquensaurus look almost petite in comparison.
- âThe Anacleto Formation where Neuquensaurus fossils were found has also produced fossils of giant predators and other titanosaurs, meaning this dinosaur lived in one of the most dinosaur-dense ecosystems ever discovered on Earth.
