Fun Facts
- âAll 20-plus known specimens of Liaoningosaurus are juveniles, and scientists have never found a fully grown adult, meaning we still do not know how big this dinosaur actually got.
- âA 2018 study by Vickaryous and colleagues proposed that Liaoningosaurus had a bony belly shield, something almost no other ankylosaur is known to have, which completely puzzled the paleontology community.
- âLiaoningosaurus was named in 2001 by three Chinese paleontologists: Xu Xing, who is also famous for describing dozens of feathered dinosaurs from the same Liaoning region of China.
- âThe species name 'paradoxus' literally means paradox, chosen because this dinosaur broke so many rules of what an ankylosaur was supposed to look like and eat that scientists found it deeply contradictory.
- âFish scales and fish remains have been found preserved near the stomach region of at least one Liaoningosaurus specimen, leading some researchers to argue it was actively hunting fish rather than eating plants.
