- âMissouri officially designated Hypsibema missouriensis as its state dinosaur in 2004, making this ancient hadrosaur one of the only prehistoric animals to hold an official government recognition.
- âThe species name H. crassicauda comes from the Latin crassus (thick) and cauda (tail), because even from fragmentary bones, paleontologists could tell this dinosaur had a massively built tail.
- âHypsibema fossils have been found in two geological formations over 500 miles apart: the Tar Heel Formation in North Carolina and the Marshalltown Formation in New Jersey, showing hadrosaurs ranged widely along the ancient Atlantic coast.
- âA second species, H. missouriensis, was found in Missouri, meaning that animals related to Hypsibema lived across a huge swath of eastern North America, from inland river systems all the way to coastal swamps.
