Fun Facts
- âWhen scientists described Haplocheirus in the journal Science in 2010, it pushed the known origins of alvarezsauroids back by a staggering 63 million years, forcing a complete rewrite of that group's entire family tree.
- âWhile its later alvarezsauroid cousins evolved bizarre single-clawed arms for ripping open insect mounds, Haplocheirus still had all three fingers on each hand, showing scientists exactly what those arms looked like before millions of years of evolution made them almost unrecognizable.
- âHaplocheirus was found in the same Shishugou Formation as Guanlong, a small horned relative of T. rex that wore a dramatic crest on its head, meaning these two very different dinosaurs once shared the same Jurassic landscape.
- âThe species name 'sollers' is a Latin word meaning clever or skilled, a tribute to the versatile three-fingered hands that could grip, catch, and manipulate prey with far more dexterity than the specialized claws of its later relatives.
- âA nearly complete skeleton of Haplocheirus was recovered including the skull, which is unusually good preservation for a small theropod from the Jurassic and gave scientists an exceptionally detailed picture of what this dinosaur actually looked like.
