Fun Facts

  • Halisaurus was named in 1869 by Othniel Charles Marsh, one of the most famous fossil hunters in American history, who was also behind naming over 80 other prehistoric species during the Bone Wars era.
  • Just one year after naming it, Marsh changed the name to Baptosaurus in 1870 because he wrongly thought Halisaurus conflicted with the fish name Halosaurus, but modern rules say a single-letter difference is enough to keep both names separate.
  • Halisaurus fossils have been discovered on at least 8 countries spanning four continents, including Peru, Jordan, Angola, Niger, Argentina, and Chile, making it one of the most geographically widespread mosasaurs known.
  • The original Halisaurus holotype is made up of just two bone fragments: an angular bone from the jaw and a basicranium piece from the skull base, yet these tiny pieces were enough for Marsh to recognize an entirely new genus.
  • Halisaurus lived during a time when a giant inland sea called the Western Interior Seaway split North America in half from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to the Arctic Ocean, and it cruised these warm shallow waters as a top predator.
