Fun Facts

  • Dracorex hogwartsia is the only dinosaur in the world officially named after a fictional wizarding school, Hogwarts from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.
  • Unlike its close relative Pachycephalosaurus with its famous bowling-ball dome, Dracorex had a completely flat skull covered in spikes and knobs, making it look genuinely dragon-like.
  • Famous paleontologist Jack Horner proposed in 2009 that Dracorex may not be a separate species at all, but rather a juvenile Pachycephalosaurus before its dome fully grew in.
  • The only known Dracorex skull was found by amateur fossil hunters in 2003 and donated to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, where it is still on display today.
  • J.K. Rowling herself was informed of the dinosaur's naming and reportedly said she was 'deeply honoured' to have a dinosaur named after her fictional school.
