Fun Facts
- âCameroceras lived from about 477 to 443 million years ago, meaning it patrolled the oceans more than 200 million years before the first dinosaurs ever walked on land.
- âSome shell fragments attributed to Cameroceras suggest lengths of up to 9 meters (nearly 30 feet), which would make it the largest animal known to have lived on Earth during the entire Ordovician period.
- âCameroceras belonged to the group Endocerida, which had the largest siphuncles of any cephalopod ever found, sometimes so thick they look like a separate fossil on their own.
- âLike a living submarine, Cameroceras controlled its depth in the water by pumping fluid in and out of its shell chambers, the same basic trick used by the modern nautilus today.
- âFossils of Cameroceras have been found in rocks that were once shallow tropical seas near the equator, meaning what is now North America was a warm ocean paradise crawling with these giant shell-beasts.
