Fun Facts
- âBactrosaurus was described in 1933 by American paleontologist Charles Whitney Gilmore, who named it after the ancient region of Bactria because the fossils were found in what is now Inner Mongolia, China, close to that historically significant Central Asian territory.
- âScientists have found bones from multiple Bactrosaurus individuals at the same site, suggesting these dinosaurs may have lived or traveled in groups rather than alone.
- âBactrosaurus is one of the earliest members of the hadrosaur family tree, meaning it lived millions of years before the famous duck-billed dinosaurs like Edmontosaurus and Parasaurolophus evolved and dominated the Late Cretaceous.
- âAlthough Bactrosaurus has been known to science for nearly a century, no complete skeleton has ever been found, so paleontologists have had to piece together what it looked like from partial bones scattered across multiple specimens.
- âSome early Bactrosaurus fossils were mixed up with bones from another dinosaur called Gilmoreosaurus, which meant scientists had to go back and re-examine the original specimens decades later to sort out which bones belonged to which animal.
