Fun Facts

  • Alvarezsaurus weighed only about 3 kg, roughly the same as a bag of sugar, making it one of the lightest predatory dinosaurs known from South America.
  • The entire Alvarezsauridae family, to which Alvarezsaurus belongs, was so bizarre that when scientists first described them in the 1990s, there was a serious debate about whether they were dinosaurs at all or some strange flightless birds.
  • Alvarezsaurus was named in 1991 by legendary Argentine paleontologist José Bonaparte, the same scientist who discovered more new South American dinosaur species than almost any other researcher in history.
  • The Bajo de la Carpa Formation, where Alvarezsaurus fossils were found, preserves a semi-arid floodplain environment from about 83 to 86 million years ago, meaning this tiny predator lived in a landscape more like a dry savanna than a jungle.
  • Later relatives of Alvarezsaurus, such as Mononykus, evolved a single massive clawed finger on each arm, and scientists now think the whole family may have used these stubby powerful arms to rip open insect nests, like a Cretaceous anteater.
