Fun Facts
- âAlioramus had at least five distinct bony ridges running along the top of its snout, a feature so unusual that early scientists were not sure if they were looking at a new species or just a juvenile of a known one.
- âAt roughly 19 feet long, Alioramus was a lightweight by tyrannosaurid standards, weighing perhaps only 800 pounds while its contemporary Tarbosaurus bataar could reach 13,000 pounds in the same ecosystem.
- âThe second species, Alioramus altai, was named in 2009 by paleontologist Stephen Brusatte and colleagues from a nearly complete skeleton, making it one of the best-known Asian tyrannosaurs despite being discovered so recently.
- âA 2011 bone texture study of the Alioramus altai specimen suggested it was not yet fully grown when it died, meaning adult Alioramus may have been even larger than the fossils we have today.
- âThe discovery of the Chinese tyrannosaur Qianzhousaurus in 2014 proved that Alioramus was not just an odd loner but belonged to a whole separate tribe of long-snouted tyrannosaurs called Alioramini, meaning there was an entire evolutionary branch of big-nosed predators we barely knew existed.
