biting sperm whale, ancient ocean apex predator

blower or bellows, from Ancient Greek, the same root used for the modern sperm whale genus Physeter
Fun Facts
- ✓Brygmophyseter had up to 12 massive, thickly enameled teeth in both its upper and lower jaws, while its modern relative the sperm whale only has functional teeth in the lower jaw, making Brygmophyseter a far more powerful biter.
- ✓The only known Brygmophyseter skeleton, discovered in Japan, is nearly complete, which is extraordinarily rare for an ancient whale and allowed scientists to estimate its body length at 6 to 7 meters, roughly the length of a large great white shark.
- ✓Brygmophyseter was first described scientifically in 1994 but was placed in the wrong genus, Scaldicetus, because only its teeth were studied. It took until 2006 for researchers to give it its own proper genus name based on the full skeleton.
- ✓Brygmophyseter lived approximately 14 to 16 million years ago during the Miocene epoch, a time when the oceans were teeming with giant sharks like Megalodon, meaning Brygmophyseter may have competed with or been preyed upon by some of the largest predators in ocean history.
- ✓Scientists believe Brygmophyseter was a macroraptorial sperm whale, a now-extinct group of super-predatory whales that hunted large prey including other whales, essentially filling the role in ancient oceans that modern orca pods fill today.
