Fun Facts

  • Arizonasaurus lived approximately 244 million years ago during the Middle Triassic period, making it one of the oldest known sail-backed vertebrates ever discovered.
  • Its sail was formed by dramatically elongated neural spines on its vertebrae, some estimated to be several times the height of the vertebra itself, giving it a profile unlike almost any other Triassic animal.
  • Arizonasaurus belongs to a group called ctenosauriscids, a family of archosaurs that were surprisingly close relatives of the lineage that eventually gave rise to crocodilians, not dinosaurs.
  • The species was named A. babbitti in 1947, and the name honors Bruce Babbitt, a former governor of Arizona who later served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior and was an advocate for natural lands.
  • New, better-preserved specimens of Arizonasaurus were described by paleontologist Sterling Nesbitt in 2003, dramatically improving scientists' understanding of what the animal actually looked like more than 50 years after its original naming.
