Fun Facts
- ✓Onychodus was first described in 1857 by American paleontologist John Strong Newberry from scattered fossil teeth found in Ohio, making it one of the earliest Devonian fish to be scientifically named in North America.
- ✓Fossils of Onychodus have been found on at least five continents and in countries including the United States, Australia, Germany, Norway, and England, proving it was one of the most geographically widespread predatory fish of the entire Devonian Period.
- ✓Onychodus belonged to a strange group called onychodontiforms, lobe-finned fish that had fleshy, muscular fins more like limb stubs than flat fans, placing them closer on the family tree to the ancestors of all land vertebrates than to modern bony fish.
- ✓The genus survived for an extraordinary span of geological time, with fossil records stretching from roughly 393 million years ago all the way to around 307 million years ago, meaning it persisted through the Late Devonian mass extinction that wiped out most large fish predators.
- ✓Some Onychodus specimens recovered from Australia are exceptionally complete, preserving not just teeth but skull bones and scales, allowing scientists to reconstruct the full shape of the head and confirm that the tooth whorl on the lower jaw could swing forward during a strike.
